Rural Australians for Refugees emphatically opposes the proposed Migration Bill Amendments.
Our opposition is based on the following key objections:
The excessive power it gives the Government to ignore Australia’s legal obligations as a signatory to a number of international treaties and to overturn responsibilities and protections to refugees and asylum seekers in the 1951 Refugee Convention.
The wide reaching political power it gives to the Minister to make decisions about people and to impose conditions and punishments based on assumptions that infringe people’s liberty and personal dignity and cause permanent harm.
The Government’s increased power to detain people indefinitely offshore and to deport people to third countries where they are at risk of persecution, detention and death.
